Purple Mountains is a lyrical, dry-witted record that balances warm country-rock arrangements with some of the sharpest writing on any indie release of its period. The melodies stay generous even when the mood darkens, and songs like All My Happiness Is Gone and Margaritas At The Mall give the album its mix of ache, clarity and black humour.SIDE ONE:1.
