This giant Alocasia Zebrina is an extremely popular and well-known houseplant. Originally, the Alocasia comes from Asia where the plant grows in the rainforest. But nowadays, this elegant tropical plant can often be found in homes with its fantastic striped stems. These stems are black and white, just like a zebra. The unusual stems in combination with the beautiful green leaves are characteristic of Alocasia. The beautiful heart-shaped leaves are also reminiscent of the floppy ears of an elephant. For this reason the plant is also called 'Elephant ear'.
Due to its origin from tropical regions, the Alocasia Zebrina prefers a humid surroundings. It is therefore also important to keep the potting soil moist at all times by regularly giving small splashes of water. Preferably do not give cold tap water: the Alocasia is quite sensitive. Place the plant preferably in a light place, but not directly in the sun. It is also good to know that as soon as the Alocasia forms new leaves, an older leaf may turn yellow and start drooping. These are best cut off just above the ground. Eventually the Zebrina can grow leaves as large as 150 cm! Be careful because the Alocasia Zebrina is toxic to humans and pets.
