Sunlight finds Herbie Hancock leaning further into song form, synth texture and crossover funk while still keeping the musicianship razor sharp. The vocoder-heavy sheen gives the record a very particular late 1970s character, but it is more than a period piece - there is real warmth in the grooves and plenty of movement underneath the surface polish.
